It would be fair to say that I am a man of simple tastes yet deep passions and somehow the two have become entwined in my mind and my life. The two come together in the word food, with a bit of help from my rapeseed oil.
My palate has become more refined in recent years and I enjoy a bit of fine dining with the best of them, but there are some basic foods that will forever be at the top of my ‘love list, like bread.
This is of course ‘the staff of life‘, found all over the globe and with good reason. It is, on one level, a simple food made with basic ingredients and on another a joy for the palate, especially fresh and warm, or wrapped around a piece of cheese.
I suspect many will agree with me but perhaps you don’t know that my rapeseed oil makes a mean loaf. If you don’t believe me, then just ask Duncan who founded the Thoughtful Bread Company, an artisan bakery in Bath. So much does he like our pure oil, that it’s the only one he uses.
I’ve been told on many occasions, or at least it seems to me, that the nice things I really enjoy, like a big slice of cake, are bad for me. However sometimes I find ways of keeping my palate and tummy happy without upsetting my conscience and I don’t mean by cheating! For instance I know that when I have some of my wife’s homemade cake, it is made with my rapeseed oil and not butter, which means it is a healthier (less than half the amount of saturated fat) and an even more enjoyable treat. So get out the rapeseed oil and bring on the bread and cake, what could be better?
