The summer so far has been amazing, clear blue skies and lots and lots of sunshine, although somewhat typically as I write this, it has just started raining. Actually I’m quite happy with the rain as the hay has been cut and gathered and the crops were looking like they could do with a pick me up. Obviously if it rains for two weeks I will have a rather different opinion, we call it ‘Farmers’ prerogative’!

As we head into July, my thoughts are already turning to the harvest, which is of course the most critical time of the year for us. A 10% shift either way in our yields, makes a huge difference to the profitability of the farm and of course, eventually the price of food on the shelves of the shops around the country. Of course there is not much we can do now to change things, apart that is from making the right calls about when to and when not to get the machines out on the fields. Sadly even my clever weather forecasting apps and websites cannot be that accurate a few months in advance, although I can confidently predict that I will be spending far too many hours on the combine through July and August.
Meanwhile I am trying to enjoy the calm before the storm, and there have been a few barbecues and even a canoe paddle on the river that runs behind the house. Apart from a good meaty burger, I have to say that I am rather partial to some freshly made potato salad using either my classic, or mint mayonnaise, and a portion of tomato salad drizzled with Fussels Quince and Cider Vinegar dressing. Can’t believe I used the word drizzle, I think I need to get back on the tractor out again and do some proper farming!…
